Review OSP DD-502 Elecronic Digital Drums
Note: One year follow up review of the DD-502 here.
One day I went to Guitar Center to check out some guitars. I strolled into the drum room and started to play around with some of the Roland digital drum sets. I was having a blast but don’t have $1000’s of dollars to blow on a set.
I poked around a few drum forums and learned about a kit for sale on Ebay called the OSP DD-502. Most of the posters on the forums were kind of raggin on the OSP set. I chalked it up to the fact they were primarily drummers just being a little harsh.
I took a chance an ordered the DD-502 from Sigler Music on Ebay. This set cost me $399 with free shipping. I also got a free throne and some sticks. The set cam complete with all pedals too. I am quite pleased so far.

Sigler Music ships Fedex and I had it to my house in a matter of days right before Christmas.
Setup took about an hour. I gave the toms a few wacks and was impressed with the sturdiness of the set. I was expecting the frame to be a little flimsy. I plugged the set in and threw on some headphones. This thing didn’t sound too bad !
The drum module comes with 20 drum sets. You can also custom build up to 10 of your own sets choosing from about 230 different sounds. All of the sounds are useful sounds. Another real fun feature is that the module has 50 songs you can jam along with of all different types of styles. Some of the songs sound like cheesy midi compositions but they are a blast non the less.
Check out the video demo ! Just don’t rank on the playing !
One nice thing about buying from Sigler Music is that they also have a retail store. So I felt a little more confident buying from them.
The bottom line this is a totally awesome set for anyone looking to get a knock around set or an introduction to electronic drums.

so i have this osp dd-502 set and i just bought rockband 2 for 360 and found that i might be able to use it? What if anything can i do or buy to get this going. i tried to look at the forums but no post on the subject!
Hi, i would like to share this with you guys, i have been looking high n low for a drum kit i can use for rockband , ghwt ,ps3 games and at the same time play with the real E drums. i have been reading this up,
option 1:sigler music sells ION drum rocker for rb2 games.
option2:sigler music sells an upgrade , means an extra hi hat, bass pad and pedal and a dd502 module from osp to make this ion drum REAL E drum.
option 3: sigler sells an EXTREME upgrade that comes with speakers AMP and all to make this drum a gaming kit, REAL E drum and ALSO playing E Drum with REAL LIVE sound on GAMES.
According to my own research, U can do the above, or get any other E drums with MIDI out connects to a device called MIDI ROCKER :http://www.bytearts.com/midi/#download as to USB to your gaming console for RB or GHWT.
or
any orther 3rd party devices that connects MIDI out to USB to game console.
people said it works well, i dunt know how true.
My aim is to get a REAL e drum where i can play REAL AND games at the same time.
CAn any expert here give some advices on getting the good setup? roland td3 midi out to ps3 or siglermusic’s osp midi out to ps3 with ion drums OR any other edrum + MIDI rocker to ps3?
im a little confused by: if i use any real Edrum midi out to ps3 rb2, do i still get the REAL LIVE e drum sound from the DRUMs or just the normal hit whack sound on the plastic pads.
wth. i hope im not confusing u guys.
however, dd502 sounds good except the few complains abt the static bass sound mentioned above..
curtis-
I think all you need to do is buy a midi cable and connect the two sets. I have rockban world tour and th dd-502 but I haven’t had time yet to try to connect the two together.
Hi curtis, u mean connect the dd502 midi out to the GHWT drumset as an adapter?
ive heard legends that it works. do u mind trying it out n tell us all? I bet plenty of us are trying to find out. im a noob to all these man.
btw, im looking at dm5 pro with surge cymbals. looks good. wadaya say?
thanks btw
cheers!
Everyone is saying that the ghwt drums accpet midi, but i hadn’t read any of that yet and purchased rockband 2 instead. ive always been more into the music on rockband than gh. but no you cant use the dd502 that i know of yet with the factory kit that comes with rockband due to no midi input. im actually on the hunt for an ion brain without the drums to see if i can use it insead of the dd502 (just for the game) but no luck yet. They all seem to be sold as a kit only. so i guess if anyone finds out anything else let me know.
also could someone drop me a limk for these mesh replacment heads
Hi, just bought alesis dm5 pro with surge cymbals. and midi to usb converter cable. gonna try it out to see if it works on rockband and ghwt.
BTW, the mesh heads are listed on ebays and amazon.com i saw them.
good luck pal!
Have a good new year!
cheers
Hi, i had successfully done it with my GHWT drum kit thru midi. and set the midi notes for ghwt.
1 question:it works fine for ghwt game but about RB2 which only requires 4 colour bar, the green pad and cymbals are combined? i had tried setting my dm5 crash cymbals midi note to 45 and changed the voice to crash but there are dual voiced output.. the crash + the tom note:45.. common problem? So i guess i cant use the crash cymbals for rb2? OR will your adapter fix this?
not perfect
thanks bro
Thanks for the reply, webmaster.
I got a DD502 and playing with it has been quite fun, but the plastic feel of the original drum heads is making me buying some replacement heads. Any suggestions? I was looking into Remo Emperor heads (http://www.amazon.com/Remo-Coated-Emperor-Drumhead-Snare/dp/B0002GFNWW/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&s=musical-instruments&qid=1231044743&sr=8-9)
Thanks,
Will
Hi, thanks for this awesome video and comments, I didn’t get a chance to read all of them yet, but I do have a question for you if you still come to this and read it. I notice the sound quality sounds like you have it plugged in your computer recording directly from the computer? If this is so, how do you do it, I am planning on getting it and would love to do that! If not, can you tell me how you got it to sound so clear? Did you just have the amp by your mic? One more question, the cord that goes from the drums to the amp, do they make something with that adapter to hook up to a usb port or anything?
Hi,
I just got my DD502 and it works pretty fine but I always lose my saved custom kit whenever i turn off the brain :-/ Is there a way to make this work ?
thx, m.
Hi guys,
For those wanting to use their E-drums (basically any EDrums that has Midi out capabilities) then you will want to look for something called the “Seth’s Adapter”. I have tried one of these and it works beautifully with both Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero World Tour along with a DD502. I’ll be picking my Seth’s Adapter up from my supplier this Friday and will use it on my PS3.
As far as the DD502 drums are concerned they are a great buy and are quite durable. I got myself the rubber padded version (DD502J) from Hong Kong and it is more responsive and quiet than the others sold here in the States.
I’ve also seen a mesh head conversion on YouTube that explains how to convert using commercial mesh heads or even through a non-destructive DIY project. Look for user stratocaster539 who also will help you out if you have any questions and is a really cool guy. He helped me so much with my kit and helped me to get it exactly the way I wanted it.
To add to gMsCoTT I think Seth’s adapter is a midi to usb converter and I don’t think it will work with Xbox360.
How does the hi-hat work on this? Does the pedal register anything between fully open and fully closed?
I purchased OSP DD502 for a drum brain to replace the Ion usb drum box. I am using an Ion ied01 with an Alesis brain and ied05 combined into 1 set. I also purchased 4 icy01 cymbals, because I did not want triangle cymbals. Once everything was hooked up, I started to experiment with both modules. I used a splitter to trigger into both modules for cymbals, h-hat, and ride. The result was 2 different sounds from 1 pad or cymbal. Light hits triggered the alesis, and medium to hard hard hits triggered both. I have a tamborine matched with the h-hat, ride bell matched with a ringing ride, and a splash matched with a crash. Adjusting the sensitivity, you can choose which module triggers on light hits. The volume of the alesis is lower when you plug in the alesis headphone to the OSP aux input, a seperate mixer or preamp can fix that. The OSP DD502 sounds are decent, and work great with the trigger pads from the Ion kits. More to follow soon! R-n-R
I have the OSP DD502 and connected the MIDI to Guitar Hero World Tour with no real issues. Set the kit to #3 and everything works. The “orange” cymbal becomes the crash on the DD502. I bought two 1/4″ mono splitters to give me two “green” and two “orange” for the GHWT game. Just move two plugs from the DD502 into the splitter and back when you are not playing the game. Easy setup.
I am looking at changing the cymbals on the set. I would like full round cymbals. Any suggestions?
that helps alot, i should have my dd502 shipped by monday and i’ll try it out. I’m currently using the Ion Drum Rocker and i assumed that if i used the dd502 Midi connected with World Tour Drums then it should work. For the Cymbals you could check what Roland has.
i like the set but you cant choke the cymbals does any body know how to change that?
Are you able to use your hi-hat pedal control with GHWT. I have tried several different options to include midi to USB with a remapper but my hi-hat pedal would not register
does anyone know where i can obtain the mounting clamps for the dd502? cant seem to find them anywhere, ive got 2 broken with wear, need replacements badly starting to crack up!
I have extra mounting clamps for the DD502 drum set. They sell on ebay for $20 a piece or anyone that is an OSP dealer. Email me at youngnbald@hotmail.com and let me know what you are looking for. I have the tom and cymbal clamps. Will sell cheaper than dealers prices.

Curtis. If you wanna play your set with rb2, you go on the Internet and purchase the jenny-5. It’s based off of the rb2 brain and works almost any electric drum pads
Hi I am using this too. However I have some problems… The console switches off by itself after a few seconds of turning on.. Based on your experience, what could be the possible problem? Is it the console or the cable? Thanks..
Can someone give me the dimensions on the DD502 electronic drum set. I have very limited space. Does it fold up in any way for storing? Thank you
You only need about 4 ft (wide) and 3 ft (deep) to set them up and yes, you could fold them up or dismantle them if you wanted to.
What I’d like to know though is how easy is it to add songs/sounds to the set?
It is possible, right?
Can I just connect the midi out to the laptop or do i need something else?
I don’t recall being able to add songs to the set. I will sometines take a midi file and render it without the drums into an MP3 and use that as a backing track for playing drums along with.
hello everyone! Just wanted to put a word out there about the dd502 set from sigler online. The sounds are great, and didn’t need to buy a double bass pedal because when designing a custom kit-I just programmed my hi-hat pedal to the same voice as my bass drum head. Sounds really great. My only issue is that I only had the kit for 2months and already 2cymbal triggers and 1tom are completely broken(with the rubber already ripped on the 3rd cymbal as well)so I had to send them all back to sigler for replacement. FYI-I only hit the pads as hard as the guy in the demo video and now I’m just waiting to see if sigler will honor the warranty. Great set. Great price. Horrible quality though.
Hello out there, I have a set of DD-502 druns and am having a problem with them “popping”. It seems to me that it is a capacitor that is unloading or something like that. Has anybody had that problem? I have been trying to find a place I could buy another control board but to no avail.
Anybody know of a place?
Hello, we have the drum rocker and just bought the roadie kit with double bass pedals. Our bass doesn’t really pick up. You have to really hit the pedals to get a decent soun. Any suggestions, will changing the kickpad head help to make it more sensitive?
Thanks Larry
